Singapore’s History an Integral Part of Humanities Lessons

Singapore's History an Integral Part of Humanities Lessons
We appreciate Mr Zhang Guocheng's views on the importance for schools to educate students on Singapore's history ("Singapore students' knowledge of history needs to be strengthened", December 12) and the value of the Humanities.
The Humanities play a crucial role in cultivating a deep understanding of and love for our nation's history and heritage in our students. In primary schools, students learn about the contributions of Singapore's first-generation political leaders such as Mr David Marshall, Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Mr S. Rajaratnam through Social Studies lessons. In secondary schools, Singapore's journey towards independence and its nation-building years are covered in the lower secondary History lessons.
These lessons are further brought to life when students go on learning journeys to museums and heritage centres such as the National Museum of Singapore, the Geylang Serai Heritage Gallery, Indian Heritage Centre and Kreta Ayer Heritage Gallery.
MOE will continue to work closely with schools to provide holistic and engaging learning experiences that will allow students to appreciate Singapore's past, understand the present, and contribute meaningfully in the future.
