We agree with Ms Lee Jiamin's view that using fun and engaging pedagogies can motivate students to learn the Chinese Language ("教学方式对学习华文影响大", May 30).

This is why our teachers are equipped with a repertoire of teaching approaches and resources to nurture students' interest in MTL to enable them to continue learning the language for life. For example, the recently rolled out 2024 Primary Mother Tongue Language (MTL) curriculum incorporates a variety of learning experiences and greater use of technology to engage and support students in the learning of MTL both in and out of the classroom. Additionally, the new MTL curriculum incorporates gamification and game-based activities within the classroom to make learning joyful.

The refreshed curriculum comes with a suite of interactive digital resources that can be accessed through the Singapore Student Learning Space (SLS). This includes the Hanyu Pinyin Animation (小精灵动画) and Shen Bi Animation (神笔动画 - 汉字小时候) that facilitate the learning of Hanyu Pinyin and word recognition in fun and engaging ways. There are also printed and online supplementary readers (和书一起飞系列)to reinforce learning and nurture a love for reading in students.

Beyond the classroom, the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL) works with various community partners to organise activities throughout the year to nurture and deepen students' interest in the Chinese Language. Programmes and activities are planned for all levels of students, from primary schools to Junior Colleges/Centralised Institute. For example, the "Xin Kong Xia" National Schools Xinyao Festival (新空下2024), Young Reporter News Challenge (《我来报新闻》挑战赛), World Book Day and Literature Under the April Sky (世界书香日暨文学四月天), and the Chinese Street Dance Competition (爱上华文街舞比赛).

Parents play an important role in shaping our children's attitudes and mindsets towards language learning. MOE will continue to work closely with parents, schools, and the community to cultivate a supportive learning environment that enhances our students' proficiency in MTL.
