Mr Leong Mun Wai, Non-Constituency Member of Parliament

Question

To ask the Minister for Education (a) how many complaints has the Committee for Private Education received each year since 2016; and (b) what are the top ten categories of these complaints.

Response

1. SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) received an average of around 650 complaints on Private Education Institutions per year from 2016 to 2018. The number of complaints has since declined to around 200 on average per year from 2019 to 2023, given mandatory minimum standards set through the Enhanced Registration Framework and the Dispute Resolution Scheme for consumer protection.

2. These complaints can be broadly categorised into three types, namely: (i) administrative matters, such as admission processes and certificate issuance; (ii) academic matters, such as management of examinations and feedback on teachers and staff; and (iii) course fees and payment-related matters.
