Cultural Heritage Walk 2019 Commemorates Singapore Bicentennial

1. Culture and heritage came alive for about 480 students at this year’s Cultural Heritage Walk, with an array of experiential learning activities held at various clan, cultural, and heritage sites in Bukit Pasoh and Chinatown. Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Chairperson of the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL), Ms Low Yen Ling, flagged off the walk as the Guest-of-Honour.

Organised by CPCLL and the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA) for the fourth year, the walk helped students to gain a better appreciation of our rich and distinctive multicultural identity. This year, more activity time was allocated at each station to allow for deeper engagement by the students. Each route comprised three stations located at culturally-significant landmarks, featuring varied activities – such as Chinese calligraphy and Hakka food demonstrations – offered by 12 cultural and religious partner organisations.

3. In commemoration of Singapore’s Bicentennial, CPCLL and SFCCA also incorporated additional activities as part of the walk to raise students’ awareness about our pioneers’ contributions to society. Students participated in quizzes to learn more about some of the cultural organisations that they visited. They also took “freeze photos” of themselves at the last station based on a Singapore Bicentennial-related theme.

4. 14 schools participated in this year’s walk, up from 12 in 2018. More than 100 volunteers from secondary schools, polytechnics, and universities were also involved, up from 80 volunteers in 2018. Please refer to ANNEX A for the list of participating schools and ANNEX B for details of the routes.
