New Teaching Resource to Help Primary Students Build Strong Foundations in Chinese Language
Last Updated: 06 Apr 2023
The Ministry of Education (MOE) has developed a new pedagogical resource for Chinese language teachers at the primary level to help students strengthen their oracy and literacy skills. Titled《ABLE教学大家行》, the resource collates teaching strategies, case studies, lesson activities and multi-modal learning materials tailored for teachers of Chinese language students in the Mother Tongue Support Programme (MTSP).
2. Developed by educators for educators, 《ABLE教学大家行》is the culmination of more than five years of observations and trials of teaching practices to best support primary students who require additional support to learn the Chinese language. The teaching resource was launched by Minister of State for Education Ms Gan Siow Huang at a visit to Valour Primary School on 6 April 2023, where more than 300 Chinese language teachers from over 110 primary schools observed a live lesson demonstration of how the resource can be used to teach students in the MTSP.
3. Based on an MOE survey conducted last year with over 2,600 students, more than 90% of Chinese language students in the MTSP enjoyed learning activities in their Chinese classes. More than 80% expressed confidence in learning the Chinese language well, and over 70% of students felt that their Chinese language skills had improved after participating in the programme.
4. The MTSP was launched in 2019 to help Primary Three and Four students build a strong foundation in their mother tongue language, and to strengthen their interest and confidence to learn the language for life. Since its introduction, the MTSP has supported more than 16,000 students, including 9,000 Chinese language students. There are currently over 700 Chinese language teachers trained to teach the MTSP.
5. Every primary school will receive four copies of the《ABLE教学大家行》resource by this year.
