Polytechnics

1. Admission matters and courses offered

To be eligible for admission into a polytechnic course, you must meet these 2 criteria:

  1. Your ELR2B2 net aggregate score must not exceed 26. The exception is the Diploma in Nursing, whereby your ELR2B2-C net aggregate score must not exceed 28.
  2. Meet the minimum entry requirements (MER) of the course that you are applying for. Find out the MER of specific courses on CourseFinder or refer to this document for the consolidated MER of all courses.

Aggregate computation for polytechnic courses

ELR2B2 net aggregate score
= English Language (EL) + 2 Relevant Subjects (R1, R2) + 2 Best Subjects (B1, B2)
minus CCA bonus points
Each polytechnic course uses one of these net aggregate score types to assess course eligibility:

You can use CourseFinder to check the fields of study for courses related to each aggregate type.

The aggregate scores for the different aggregate types are computed as such:

What cannot be used for aggregate computation

You cannot use:

  • The grades of Higher Mother Tongue Language and Mother Tongue Language in the same aggregate computation. For example, in ELR2B2-C aggregate type, if Higher Chinese is used as best subject B1, Chinese cannot be used as a best subject B2.
  • “Merit” and “Pass” grades for the Mother Tongue ‘B’ Syllabus for aggregate computation.
  • Higher Mother Tongue Language: Higher Chinese, Higher Malay and Higher Tamil
  • Mother Tongue Language: Chinese, Malay and Tamil
  • Mother Tongue ‘B’ Syllabus: Chinese ‘B’, Malay ‘B’ and Tamil ‘B’

You can get a maximum of 2 bonus points from CCA grade.

  • If you are a private candidate, current or ex-student of other types of institution (JC, MI or ITE) and are eligible to apply for polytechnic courses through JAE, you will still be entitled to CCA bonus points.
  • The previous year's JAE net aggregate scores in CourseFinder are only used as a reference and do not guarantee admission. The actual course aggregate scores depend on students' O-Level results and course choices in the current JAE, which can differ from previous years.
