Learning support

Some students in primary school can benefit from learning support. Learn more about the programmes and how they can help your child.

What is learning support?

Through specialised early intervention programmes, learning support is provided for students who need additional help with:
  • English Language
    Students will be identified at the start of Primary 1 (P1) to join the programme.
  • Mathematics
    Students will be identified at the start of P1 to join the programme. Additional low-progress learners may be subsequently identified to join the programme in Primary 2, 3 or 4, if required. 
  • Mother Tongue Languages
    Students will be identified at Primary 2 to join the programme in Primary 3 and 4.

Types of programmes

Learning Support Programme (LSP)

  • Conducted by trained teachers.
  • Focused on building English language skills.
  • Half an hour a day, in small groups of 8 to 10 students.

Learning Support for Mathematics (LSM) programme

  • Conducted by trained teachers.
  • Focused on developing numeracy skills.
  • (For P1 and P2) 4 to 8 periods a week, in small groups of up to 8 students.
  • (For P3 and P4) 11 periods a week, in small groups of up to 15 students.
Learning support for Mathematics may continue up to Primary 4, if required.

Mother Tongue Support Programme (MTSP)

  • Conducted by trained school teachers.
  • Focused on building stronger foundation in students' oracy and literacy skills.
  • In small groups of 8 to 12 students.
MTSP is offered at Primary 3 and 4 only.
