Transfer to a special education school
Learn how to transfer your child from their current mainstream or specialised school to a special education (SPED) school.
If your child is currently in a mainstream school or a specialised school (Northlight School and Assumption Pathway School), approach their current school’s principal to transfer your child to a SPED school.
SPED schools will not accept direct applications from parents, legal guardians, private professionals, or hospitals.
All SPED applications from mainstream and specialised schools are centrally facilitated by MOE to ensure appropriate placement and a smooth transition to a SPED school setting.
Supporting documents
Your child's current school will advise you on the documents needed for the transfer application.
If your child is seeing a medical professional and/or psychologist at a government-funded hospital or private clinic, download these templates for their reference and use:
- Medical Report (43KB)
- Psychological Report (98KB)
The transfer process
- An MOE Educational Psychologist, specialists from the MOE Special Educational Needs Division and your child's current school will review the transfer application.
- The review process will consider your child's learning needs and suitability for special education. We strongly encourage your child's medical professional and/or psychologist to work closely with MOE.
- If your child is found suitable for special education, MOE will recommend a SPED school that best meets their developmental and educational needs holistically.
- If you accept the transfer to the recommended SPED school, your child's current school and the SPED school will facilitate your child's transition to the SPED school.
- Should you decide not to transfer your child to the recommended SPED school, they will remain in their current school.
- Your child's current school will continue to work closely with you to support your child's learning needs.
