Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
ICT in teaching and learning will enable students to be imbued with the attributes of self-discovery, self-expression and self-directed learning as they become creative, responsible and independent life-long learners. Stop-motion, an animation technique in story-telling is a tool for students to create and edit characters, bringing them to life. They learn about video production, script writing, and selecting sounds to create personalized interactive digital stories. The art of programming in the development of e-Games, Robots and Drones based on the SOAR (Safety, Operation, Active learning, and Research) model has empowered students to code programs and configure robotic devices to nurture inventive competencies of varying degrees in curricular and non-curricular domains. As technology translates rhythmic movement into sound waves, students’ knowledge and understanding of musical concepts are expanded and their self-esteem and creativity greatly enhanced. Technology has become an innovative tool to break down barriers to learning music, allowing students to enjoy its many benefits and challenge them to reach their musical potential. It also enhances and promotes the intent of inclusiveness to effect greater equality for students with diverse abilities.Tanglin Business Entrepreneurship Project (TBEP)
The TBEP is an interdisciplinary project that is implemented at Tanglin School (TS) on an annual basis. The project offers TS students a rich, authentic and engaging avenue to apply and practice the skills, knowledge and attitudes learnt within the different curricular domains in school with the aim of preparing them to independently and meaningfully negotiate the demands and challenges of life after school.Choose, Think, Grow Green (CTGG)
The Choose, Think, Grow, Green (CTGG) programme raises awareness of the environment around us. With various themes focused every year, the programme has brought about knowledge and understanding for the students about the natural environment such as the need to reduce and repurpose items to protect the environment through effective waste management.Literacy A.L.I.V.E
Literacy A.L.I.V.E is an acronym which stands for “Act, Learn, Inspire, Visualize and Engage.” The intent of the programme is to bring Literacy alive in the classrooms through experiential learning, with the key purpose of promoting a love for reading among students. This is done through a process-based approach and culminates in all classes presenting the books they have read during Literacy lessons. Literacy A.L.I.V.E affords the opportunity for a wide range of skills in reading comprehension, while sustaining students’ interest through the choice of books, to be covered. Students are empowered in selecting an appropriate book to be explored, which the teacher could use as a foundation to teach higher order thinking skills such as summarising and inferring. Empowering students with a choice gives them the autonomy to make decisions in a safe environment, while providing ownership and accountability where students’ skills, knowledge, interest and preferences are expanded upon.Growing a Community of Artists through the Arts
The Visual Arts programme allows students to play, discover and make a joyful mess as they learn to trust their ideas and grow their courage to experiment and appreciate their artistic talents. In the Performing Arts, students’ auditory and visual abilities are enhanced through music and movement as well as feeling the impulse vibrations that are created by the musical instruments that they play. The art-and-music fusion programme is accessed by all students and teachers and takes the form of weekly lesson e-packages introducing the elements of both art and music, and activities that marry the two art forms. TS Artistry is an annual arts festival that celebrates the collaboration of great works by student-artists ranging from portrait drawing, watercolour painting to Latin Jive.

Highlights
Ng Yi Gui Ng Yi Gui, a 16-year-old student, is nominated for the Exemplary Student Award 2021 in recognition of his resilience and perseverance in overcoming his limitations to excel academically and in sports, and to reward him for his contributions in and beyond school. As a student leader on the prefectorial board, Yi Gui is a role model to his peers. Yi Gui helped to train one student with independent travelling and has the responsibility to ensure that he reaches his destination safely. He took initiative to feedback on his teachers on how the student is progressing with independent travelling. As a prefect, he demonstrates resilience and responsibility when performing his duties. These include taking on the job of a SafeEntry Ambassador as well as leading the school in the singing of the National Anthem, reciting the pledge and singing the school song. Yi Gui has represented Tanglin School in table tennis tournaments, for instance, the Sports School Para Games. Despite his weak gross motor skills, he would practice hard for the tournaments because he understands the value of being brave in every attempt. Yi Gui excels academically, is humble and is kind to his peers. He is polite and caring and takes the initiative to tutor his classmates when the need arises. He has a positive attitude and despite the challenges he faces, he continues to learn and grow to become a confident and independent young man. Yi Gui is an inspiration to his peers and the people around him. We believe that Yi Gui will continue to bring out the best in himself as he contributes to society in his own unique ways. |
Megan Tang Su-Ann Megan was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth, and received several forms of early interventions, including speech and language therapy. When Megan started her education at Tanglin School, she was provided with many opportunities. She is a member of TS LaTeens, had performed in many events and was one of the 88 performers in a Latin dance, an inclusive collaboration with Singtel at Play Inclusive 2019. She is the youngest member of Diverse Abilities Dance Collective (DADC) who performed at the President Challenge Show 2020. When the Singapore Youth Festival went online in 2020, Megan self-choreographed a solo-traditional Indian dance and was awarded the DanceVerve20! Certificate. In the same year, Megan was accorded the Goh Chok Tong Enable Award, recognizing her achievements in performing arts as she is an inspiration to others. Megan competed in a series of Latin dance competitions and was placed first in Latin Cha-Cha Solo category at the Special Olympics DanceSport Exchange Meet 2021 . Megan grew leaps and bounds in her confidence beyond the dance floor. She used to be very shy when it came to public speaking, she would often avoid or reject opportunities to speak in front of her classmates. However, she was receptive to coaching and encouragement and became more confident. She can project her voice and enhance her enunciation whenever she speaks in front of her classmates now. Megan has brought the performer in her into Literacy lessons as well — maintaining strong eye contact with her audience and holding their attention with engaging facial expressions and varied intonation. Our experience with Megan has affirmed our belief that every child can succeed. Megan is determined to prove to the world that she can go far beyond what was predicted for her in her early school years. She has made enormous efforts in overcoming her disability and with the support of her parents, Megan can excel in the performing arts, and reach her optimal potential to becoming a valued member of society. |
Sofiyyah Wafiqah Binte Mahmood Junior Level From avoiding going to school to waking up early all eager to go to school, the change in experience from a mainstream setting to a special school environment has indeed been a transformative one for Sofiyyah. When Sofiyyah first came to Tanglin School in 2019, she was initially reserved but observant of her new environment. As she grew more comfortable with her peers and teachers, she slowly emerged from her shell. Sofiyyah began to seek friendships with peers and expressed her curiosity for learning through questions. Her positive attitude helped her adjust well to the new curriculum and expectations set for her. Sofiyyah was selected to be a prefect and takes her role seriously, performing duties with pride such as leading in pledge-taking for PM session as well as flag lowering. Enrolling in CCA’s such as Silat and Cantabile Choir has provided Sofiyyah with opportunities to perform both in and out of school, playing a pivotal role in developing her self-confidence. Last year, Sofiyyah was selected to voice the female character in a cyber wellness virtual reality game in partnership with IMDA. She showed commitment towards the project and was given the opportunity to attend the media launch of the game. Sofiyyah’s optimism and willingness to learn and participate has made her a role model for other students in the school. Her journey is a reminder that there is no one fixed route to learning and with the right support and environment, any student can excel. |
