3. Test details

The SPERS-JC/MI tests are conducted within a day and will be held on Thursday, 7 November 2024.

Your child has to arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the tests and sit at their assigned desks at least 10 minutes before the tests begin.

Preparing for SPERS-JC/MI tests

Your child needs to be familiar with the English and Mathematics topics taught in mainstream secondary schools, especially in Secondary 3 and 4.

Test details

General ability test

The general ability test assesses your child’s general reasoning ability.

Your child will be provided with all the information they need to respond to the test questions, and clear instructions will also be provided.

The duration of the paper, including instruction and familiarisation, is 45 minutes.


English test

The English test comprises two parts:

Part 1: Writing (1 hr 50 min)

  • Section A: Editing.
  • Section B: Situational writing.
  • Section C: Continuous writing.

Part 2: Comprehension (1 hr 50 min)

  • Section A: Questions based on Texts 1 and 2, one of which is a visual text.
  • Section B: A variety of questions based on Text 3, which is a narrative or a recount.
  • Section C: A variety of questions based on Text 4, a non-narrative text and write a 80-word response to a summary writing task.

Mathematics test

The Mathematics test comprises 2 sections. Your child will only be assessed on Elementary Mathematics and will be given 2 hours to complete the paper.

Section A

  • Short answer questions (no options) – To test on fundamental skills and concepts.

Section B

  • Questions of varying marks and lengths (no options)
