- Aesthetics and creative expression
- Discovery of the world
- Health, safety and motor skills development
- Language and literacy
- Numeracy

A typical HI-Light Programme learning activity
Generally, a lesson or activity might include the following components:
Inviting children's interest: Before going on a field trip to the nature reserve, the forest was brought into the class. Children were shown pictures of plants and animals and discussed their previous experiences with nature.
Building children's curiosity about the topic: Before heading to the nature reserve, children looked for information about the reserve (e.g. a poster about the reserve) and came up with questions for their field trip.
Creating an interactive learning experience: The children went to the nature reserve and recorded their observations of plants and animals.
Extending and reflecting on what children learnt: Finally, the children talked about what they saw and learnt. They combined their drawings, photographs and videos to create a 'class story' about their field trip to the nature reserve.
